Which song do you listen to when...
you feel like 1982?
The Monster Mash
I don’t know who it is by, but it really helped me progress my fascination with vampires (because I am romanian, I feel like it is my heritage) and doing the twist. Bloodsports and 60’s dancing together really can’t be beat.
you try to stay up for more than 24 hours?
The Spencer Davis Group - Keep On Running
Best voice, best emotion, best crunchy fucking guitars. If you don’t stay awake to this and get up and start dancing, then we can never be friends. And wasn’t he like 16 years old when he sang this?! WHAT THE FUCK?! Amazing!
you take a bubble bath?
Jean Knight - Mr.Big Stuff
Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
I like showers better then baths, and singing in the shower is one of my favorite past times. I have a million standards that I sing. I am going to have to say «Mr.Big Stuff». This song is a little less cheesy then singing «You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman» by Aretha Franklin but it’s got the same shower empowerment vibe. Soul was made to me sung in the shower.
you relax on a beach?
Sparklehorse - It's A Wonderful Life
I dunno, but Sparklehorse tends to fill the musical void for all the tender moments in your life that need a soundtrack. I love this band so much it makes me sad.
you ride a bicycle?
The Music Machine - Talk Talk
This song has the best guitar hook and it is so poppy but the lyrics are so dark. The beat is damn good for bike riding as long as it is a banana bike and you are rolling around pretty leisurely.
you prepare a candle light dinner?
Etta James - Only Time Will Tell
I love some strong female vocalists, and I am really domesticated, although I have a fear of candles (like Frankenstein). I love to prepare a nice romantic dinner for my boy (he better like omelettes though, cause that is pretty much all I can make).
you go to a club?
Gang Of Four - Damaged Goods
When I am in a club I freak out when I hear «Damaged Goods», or anything by Stereo Total – cause they are the titties nipple.
you prepare for an important date?
Question Mark & The Mysterians - 96 Tears
I don’t think I have ever been on a real important date but if I did go on one I would need a standard favorite like «96 Tears». It’s fun to dance around your room to, which in turn makes you feel amazing, which in turn will make you feel confident for your important date.
you are in a depressive mood?
Nina Simone - Wild Is The Wind
Nina Simone (who I have the pleasure of sharing the same birthday with) is the catalyst for any emotion. She is hands down my favorite woman to listen to. When I get depressed I like to wallow in it for a little bit, so I would say «Wild Is the Wind».
you want to disturb your neighbours?
Motörhead - Rock N Roll
Now they should be honored to hear this, but I know not everyone gets Mr. Lemmy (who I love with a passion, I want to eat his moles for breakfast). I must say «Rock N Roll».
you drive a car late at night?
AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie
Radiohead - Exit Music (For A Film)
AC/DC - Riff Raff
Being from NYC I don’t drive, but I totally just got my learner’s permit, which means I am definitely willing to learn. You either got to keep it awake and rockin’ with songs about big girls that you can sing along to like «Whole Lotta Rosie» or «Riff Raff» or else to keep the vibe mellow and go for «Exit Music (For a Film)» by Radiohead.
you fall asleep?
Santo & Johnny - Sleep Walk
To fall asleep I need instrumental music, vocals distract me.
you make love?
Otis Redding - Open The Door
Motörhead
I made this question into parts: 1. «to make love to» I would have to say Otis Redding’s «Open The Door» cause his voice warbles enough to make a virgin bride feel creamy. 2. I added «to have sex to», and that would have to be something by Motörhead or Peaches, cause the beats are real nice, and it’s fun to have a rhythm to march to.
you jump out of a plane with a parachute?
Cheap Trick - ELO Kiddies
I don’t think I would ever willingly jump out of an airplane, but in the scenario that I would have to, I think the music would have to be pretty epic. If Cheap Trick don’t do it for you, then you might as well go without a parachute, cause you are fucked anyways.
you sit in a plane?
The Zombies - Summertime
I hate planes, so I try and detach myself from the situation as much as possible, one of my favorite bands and one of my favorite songs, the Zombies’ version of «Summertime» helps me get out of my head.
you have to spend a night in a spooky hotel?
Tag Team - Whoomp! There It Is
There were two alternatives for this answer, you could either go with the ghosts and exploit the situation by playing some creepy music to go along with their whole theme, or (which is what I would do) you would blast those ghosts away and have a 90’s hiphop dance party and play «Whoomp! There It Is» by Tag Team.
you sit in the subway?
Brenton Wood - Oogum Boogum
I can’t take the subway anymore. For the past 3 years I have gotten panic attacks at the thought of it. But I used to take it 6 times a day and in honor of that, a bit of 60’s soul is good. My favorite thing to do was to play the air piano on the pole, so let’s say «Oogum Boogum».
you wake up?
Sparklehorse - Gold Day
This song is brightly optimistic and makes me feel like I am 4 years old again being woken up on a perfect morning by my mom. 2nd runner up is: Velvet Underground - Who Loves The Sun. I take mornings very literally.
a song that reminds you of school
N.W.A. - She Swallowed It
I remember being in 3rd grade and my best friend Paula and I would hang out with our other best friend Zack Rice and we would listen to this song on repeat jumping up and down on Zack’s bed, while we would lift up our shirts and show our imaginary breasts to him. We were both madly in love with him... sigh...
best Beatles song
The Beatles - A Day In The Life
The Beatles - Do You Want To Know A Secret?
The Beatles - Happiness Is A Warm Gun
The Beatles - Because
Hardest question to answer, like who is your favorite child?
a song guaranteed to make you feel depressed
Brenda & the Tabulations - Dry Your Eyes
Reminds me of my mom. I first heard it when I was in London recording. Supremely depressed it was my mom’s first birthday since she had past away. I had downloaded a bunch of random music that I loaded into my iPod right before I left. I was crying, and this song came on out of nowhere, it totally saved me at the time because it was 100% a sign, but now it just makes me sad.
a record you fell in love to
Radiohead - The Bends
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
When I was 15 I listened to «The Bends». But the guy commited suicide, so it sort of ruined it. «Pet Sounds»: We lived together for two years. I am just starting to be able to listen to this record again without feeling melancholy. «Don’t Talk» will be the song I get married to. Sean Lennon does a fucking amazing version of it as well.
first record you remember
Supertramp - Breakfast In America
Motherfuck, I loved this record, it reminds me of my dad. I hated the cover, it scared the shit out of me. Also Pink Floyd’s «The Wall». I would be 5 years old running around my house yelling «WE DON'T NEED NO EDUCATION!». Also: The Beatles’ «Sgt. Peppers’ Lonely Hearts Club Band» and The Doors’ «Strange Days».
the song to be played at your funeral
Mahalia Jackson - Trouble Of The World
Best song pretty much ever made.
your ultimate heartbreak song
Black Sabbath - Changes
Elvis Presley - Blue Moon
I heard «Blue Moon» for the first time in the movie «Mystery Train», which has also an amazing soundtrack. His voice is so haunting. Or else «Changes». It reminds me of my mom. Losing your lady... that song is magical.
your party anthem
Iggy Pop - Sweet Sixteen
This song has made me horny since I was 16. And when I put it on it is like the pumpkin pie of songs, it brings me back to that moment, I know what it is like. It is lusty and longing and I want to be that girl that Iggy is singing about.
first record you bought
Debbie Gibson
Paula Abdul
I don’t remember but I am sure it was Debbie Gibson or Paula Abdul or something utterly amazing like that. I still think those women are brilliant. Debbie wrote all her own stuff and she was 16!!
a song that reminds your friends of you
Ella Fitzgerald - A Tisket A Tasket
Anyone that knows me knows that when I get shitfaced I like to sing standards and this is my ultimate fave. I also kill it for karaoke.
best video clip you ever saw
David Lee Roth - California Girls
ZZ Top - Legs
I want all our videos to have this vibe. David Lee Roth is the master, sexy, hilarious, campy, colorful, amazing. Also: ZZ Top - Legs. It’s the sexiest video ever. Well involving obscenely elder bearded men, besides Lord of The Rings.
a song you wish you'd written yourself
«Ave Maria»
The most beautiful opening notes in the world.
