played in Finland for the first time not until seven years after they started out. Even musically the six-up-to-eight-piece-combo from Melbourne doesn’t really match with the city famous for Eero Saarinen. Their songs are played with up to twenty instruments at the same time which can become quite messy. Function follows form.
Every Thursday morning before class, my entire school assembled in the hall and did an aerobic workout which was choreographed by 6th grade students. I have a vivid memory of doing star jumps to «Matter of Trust».
best Beatles song
The Gaylads - Eleanor Rigby
The Gaylads covering «Eleanor Rigby».
best concert you ever attended
The Avalanches
Every show by The Avalanches in Melbourne in 1997. Pretty much single handedly made me want to be in a band.
your boozed up anthem
Glass Candy - Rolling Down The Hills
Reminds me of friends and deep deep fun.
perfect anthem for Brunswick
Donna Summer - State Of Independence
Perhaps the greatest song of all time. Any song that features Michael McDonald and Michael Jackson singing backing vocals is pretty hard to top!
a song guaranteed to make you feel depressed
Animal Collective - Winters Love
Soundtrack to what would forever be a sad summer.
record you were looking for the longest
Sizzla - Give Me A Try
I am still searching, it has been almost three years! Please help me find it!
a record you fell in love to
Dirty Three - Ocean Songs
Consequently, I can't listen to it anymore! I think most kids that grew up in Melbourne in my generation had the same thing happen to them with a Dirty Three record.
first record you remember
Madonna - Material Girl
My earliest musical memory is being naked and covered in mud whilst watching the «Material Girl» video. To this day I am still confused by that.
the song to be played at your funeral
Ekkehard Ehlers - John Cassavettes Part 2
That is the kind of full stop I am looking for.
a song that evokes the greatest summer of your life
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
This was the soundtrack to about five summers in a row in Australia. It never grew old. It is so dense and so magical that it only gets better with time.
your ultimate heartbreak song
J Dilla - Last Donut Of The Night
The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody
If it wasn't in «Ghost» I would say «Unchained Melody», but it is, so I am going to say «Last Donut Of The Night» by J Dilla. That record destroys me.
your party anthem
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
So seriously universally infectious. Your fist is in the air by the 1.5 second mark.
first record you bought
Nirvana - In Utero
The first record I wasn't given as a christmas or birthday present, that I actually saved up my pocket money for was «In Utero». I had to skip «Rape Me» when I was playing it to my mum!
a song that reminds your friends of you
Art Of Noise - Moments In Love
I'd like to say «Moments In Love» but that would be me choosing!
a song you would use as a ring-tone
R.Kelly - Trapped In The Closet (Instrumental)
I was so unhealthily obsessed by the series that it stayed my ringtone for like six months.
your sunday morning song
Sebastien Tellier - Elle
Roxy Music - Avalon
«Elle» on repeat from 9-10am; then «Avalon» until high noon.
a song you wish you'd written yourself
Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere
It just floats out of the speakers so effortlessly. The sentiment still gets me every time.
