are from Morden, at the bottom of London’s Nothern Line. The foursome have specializied in speedy, tightly written underground guitar pop. Their debut single, «Small Town Girl» arrived in 2005, and they did an XFM session late that year. In 2006 they traveled to Sweden to record their debut album «Think Before You Speak», which was released in 2007.
The last time Steve stayed up for 24 hours he listened to the whole of «Soviet Kitsch» (except for the child speaking bit and the crappy punk song), walked from Oxford street to Fulham and then sat in a park until everyone else turned up to master our single. Joel was with him too.
you relax on a beach?
Patrick Wolf - Wind In The Wires
I’ve only recently started listening to his music and this is a beautiful song. It really needs your full attention and I think a beach, where you have nothing else to do, is the perfect place. With a lot of modern music the way the violin is recorded sounds really bad but the violin in this song sounds perfect.
you ride a bicycle?
The Long Blondes - Giddy Stratospheres
you go to a club?
Kings Of Leon - The Bucket
At the moment I’d say Kings of Leon. Either «The Bucket» or «King of the Rodeo» would get me dancing, or probably any Interpol, Young Knives, Mystery Jets, Clor... Too many to list.
you run from the cops?
At The Drive-In - Relationship Of Command
The music gets me in a really good mood and the best intro to a song ever is on «Pattern Against User». I was listening to this album today actually. But in relation to running from the police I think you’d need something energetic and this is it.
you run naked through a cornfield?
Korn - Joel
For obvious reasons. Although we don’t condone people listening to Korn.
you are in a depressive mood?
The Knife - Heartbeats
I don’t know if I listen to music much when I’m depressed but this would be good. The music is really nice with a really odd range of (probably synthesised) instruments but it works. And then when the woman sings, it’s really nice especially the «we were in love» bit. But I guess if I was depressed I’d probably listen to music that would cheer me up.
you want to disturb your neighbours?
Liars - Mr. You're On Fire Mr.
My favourite Liars song. I’m sure, turned up loud it would disturb my neighbours. It’s also really good to dance too.
you drive a car late at night?
I can’t drive!
you fall asleep?
Björk - Pagan Poetry
We’re all unanimous on Björk. Björk is by far the best female solo artist. Everything she does is brilliant and I like the way she is constantly changing and striving for a bit more that one obvious sound. We all think «Vespertine» as an album is brilliant and I’d say «Pagan Poetry» is my favourite song from it.
you make breakfast?
David Bowie - Oh! You Pretty Things
I never really eat breakfast, I don’t know. David Bowie is good to listen to in all situations so I might as well put it here. I’d say over breakfast I’d listen to «Oh! You Pretty Things», «Suffragette City» and then when I’ve finished my breakfast I’d put on «Let's Dance» and have a bit of a dance. I think that would be a good way to start the day.
you make love?
Marvin Gaye - Too Busy Thinking About My Baby
The last time I had sex the first Interpol album was on. «Too Busy Thinking About My Baby» would be a good choice too.
you paint your apartment?
I’m not allowed to paint my flat. If I did, I’d lose the deposit.
you jump out of a plane with a parachute?
I think it’s probably best not to listen to music when jumping out of a plane. I’d probably be really worried about pulling the parachute release cord. So wouldn’t want to be distracted by a good song.
you have to answer an elusive questionnaire?
Mystery Jets
William: Well right now we’ve got our unmastered demos playing in the background.
you are stoned?
Four Tet - Rounds
Just good music to get stoned to.
you sit in the subway?
The Long Blondes - Giddy Stratospheres
I don’t really get the tube, only if I’m drunk and there’s no over ground trains. I prefer to cycle places. So on my bike I’d listen to The Long Blondes. Probably «Giddy Stratospheres». That song is the perfect pop song and everyone should own a copy of that 7 inch.
you are on the tour bus?
Clor - Love And Pain
The Pipettes - It Hurts To See You Dance So Well
The Knife - Heartbeats
Mystery Jets - Alas Agnes
Patrick Wolf - Wind In The Wires
Recently we’ve been listening to this 5-track CD I made. It’s got Clor «Love and Pain», The Knife «Heartbeats», Mystery Jets «Alas Agnus», Patrick Wolf «Wind In The Wires» and The Pipettes «It Hurts To See You Dance So Well» on it. All really great songs that we listen to on repeat in our van.
you wake up?
I don’t listen to a particular song. I listen to Christian O’Connell’s radio show on XFM. That’s the noise I wake up to. His voice.
you need to get work done?
Clor - Love And Pain
It’s really jumpy and the instruments play off each other really well. It would get you all energetic which is good for getting work done.
you work in the garden?
Young Knives - Weekends And Bleakdays
At the moment in London it’s very hot so this would be perfect. This song is so catchy, hopefully I’d play it and their greatness would spread around the lower Morden area of London creating a nice new fan base of mainly chav scum.
